Touchstone Energy Cooperatives in the Northern Plains are developing renewable resources without legislative mandates!
During Basin Electric Power Cooperative's 2005 annual meeting, their cooperative owners, including East River, approved a voluntary renewable energy goal: to provide 10 percent of consumers needs for electricity from renewables by 2010.
Currently, electric cooperative customers in eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota receive approximately 8 percent of their energy from wind turbines. With more than 135 MW of wind energy in our portfolio, co-ops are well on their way toward achieving this voluntary goal.
In addition to wind energy, 30 percent of our power supply comes from clean, renewable hydropower from the federal dams on the Missouri River.
